Job-security rumors about New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll continue to hover over the organization with the team at 2-8 and headed toward a second-straight losing season.
While referencing how the Giants parted ways with cornerback Nick McCloud, team insider Jordan Raanan of ESPN shared an alarming update on how Big Blue players feel about the franchise's current regime.
"I’ve talked to plenty of guys in the locker room and those kind of things bother them," Raanan said during his "Breaking Big Blue" podcast, per Bridget Hyland of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com. "The GM is not that popular in the locker room at all. So, these things do matter."
Giants co-owner John Mara reportedly doesn't want to blow things up come January, but Mara also has a history of reading the room regarding how much or how little players want to fight for those in charge. Interestingly, star defensive lineman and team captain Dexter Lawrence indicated on Tuesday he was against Daboll's decision to bench starting signal-caller Daniel Jones because Lawrence still thinks Jones is "the best quarterback on the team."
While Jones undeniably played poorly over the past two seasons before his demotion, the perception exists he's now New York's QB3 largely so the club can keep him healthy and then escape his contract during the upcoming offseason. If individuals such as Lawrence believe Schoen and Daboll care more about tanking with 2025 in mind than about stacking wins through Week 18, those players could start making some in-game "business decisions" that cause Mara to make wholesale changes.
Nothing silences talk about an unhappy locker room quite like a win, and Giants players would likely have smiles on their faces come Sunday afternoon if new QB1 Tommy DeVito guides the club to an upset victory over the 4-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers at MetLife Stadium. However, those same players could be one defeat with DeVito in the lineup away from losing their desire to compete, especially if they feel Schoen and Daboll unofficially punted on the remainder of the campaign during New York's Week 11 bye.
