Jets' Davante Adams addresses bombshell report, firing of Joe Douglas

Part of a bombshell report published by The Athletic not long after New York Jets owner Woody Johnson fired general manager Joe Douglas on Tuesday claimed that Johnson "pushed Douglas" to give the Las Vegas Raiders a conditional third-round draft pick in return for star wide receiver Davante Adams last month.

During a Wednesday appearance on the FanDuel TV "Up & Adams with Kay Adams" program, Davante Adams addressed whether Johnson and/or quarterback Aaron Rodgers essentially forced Douglas to trade for the 31-year-old when the Jets were 2-4.

"I had no idea that that was even a thing — people thinking that I wasn't a Joe D guy — I didn't even know that was a narrative. But, definitely not true," Davante Adams said, as USA Today's Jack McKessy shared.

Neither the firing of head coach Robert Saleh when the Jets were 2-3 nor the acquisition of Davante Adams, Rodgers' long-time friend, saved a doomed season for a team that entered its Week 12 bye at 3-8. Adams suggested during Wednesday's segment that he wasn't shocked by Douglas' dismissal even though the former executive was set to be out of contract after the campaign.

"You kinda anticipate it coming just off of the scope of the season and the way that we've been looking as a team," Adams explained. "They gotta place the blame or put accountability on somebody. Oftentimes it winds up on the coach and the management, and that's just kind of how the cookie crumbles."

The Jets will eventually hire a new GM and head coach this winter, and many within the NFL community assume that regime will part ways with both Rodgers and Adams as part of an organizational reset. Even though Adams probably has no long-term future with the Jets, he declined to criticize Johnson regarding Tuesday's developments.

"It's not for me to say whether or not it's the right thing to do or not," Adams added about Johnson firing Douglas. "I'm just getting here, and I'm still learning about the way things work in this building and the way things have been in this building. So, I'm not here to talk about whether or not it was supposed to happen. I'm just saying that's just typically how it goes."

On Wednesday morning, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio noted that either Douglas or individuals currently associated with the Jets will leak additional information about the franchise's culture and Johnson over the next couple of months. In short, Adams should get used to hearing questions about the Jets being, in Florio's words, "a dysfunctional mess" while completing media obligations through Week 18.
