Rockies end historic scoreless streak vs. Padres with surprising HR

SAN DIEGO — The Colorado Rockies were looking for any way they could to get on the scoreboard against the San Diego Padres. Then an unexpected source of power provided the end to what had been a historic run of zeroes inside Petco Park on Friday.

Blaine Crim, called up from Triple-A earlier in the day, blasted a three-run home run with two outs in the third inning off Padres starter JP Sears to snap Colorado's scoreless streak in San Diego at 41.0 innings, putting an end to a franchise-record run of zeroes. Before Crim's home run, the Rockies had not scored in San Diego since the seventh inning of a game on August 4, 2024. That included a three-game scoreless sweep in San Diego in April and a 2-0 defeat to open the series on Thursday night.

Crim's home run was not only his first hit for the Rockies, but also his first MLB hit as well. His only previous experience in the Majors came earlier this season when he went 0-for-11 in five games with the Texas Rangers.

The numbers behind the Rockies' scoreless streak

Per Elias, the last team to go 41.0 or more scoreless innings at a specific ballpark (whether home or away) against one team was the Kansas City Royals versus the Minnesota Twins at the Metrodome. Kansas City went 42 innings without scoring between April 18 and September 4, 2004.

Crim's home run seemed to break the scoring dam for the Rockies as Kyle Farmer followed with a home run of his own on the very next pitch to boost Colorado's lead to 4-1 and bring out boos from the San Diego crowd.

Rockies interim manager had a good feeling about Blaine Crim

Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer predicted before the game that Crim could be a spark for what had been a listless Rockies offense during a swing through Los Angeles (facing the Dodgers) and San Diego, where Colorado had been held to three total runs on 12 hits.

"I'm looking for him to get his feet wet and play with his hair on fire," Schaeffer said. "He's supposed to hit for power and supposed to be a good defender. We're looking forward to seeing him play."

Crim's first MLB hit turned out to be not only a big personal milestone, but a scoreless streak stopper as well.
