Outsiders continue to speculate that New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll is playing quarterback Tommy DeVito over benched starter Daniel Jones and QB2 Drew Lock for this Sunday's home game against the 4-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers because the 2-8 Giants are "tanking" with 2025 in mind.
During Thursday's edition of the WFAN morning show, former New York Jets signal-caller and one-time NFL Most Valuable Player Boomer Esiason reacted to Daboll's move.
"I think the Giants are actually doing the right thing for their fans," Esiason said, as shared by Ryan Chichester of Audacy. "There’s a pecking order. There’s an understanding when you sign your contracts, but once the team starts losing, all of those agreements go completely out the window. All the belief your team had in you means nothing when the team starts going south."
Fair or not, the perception exists that DeVito is playing over Lock largely because of incentives attached to the contract Lock signed with the Giants this past offseason.
Additionally, individuals such as Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk have speculated the Giants are featuring DeVito in an attempt to "attract more fans to show up and buy overpriced food, drink, and merch in the four remaining home games in 2024." The New Jersey native became somewhat of a local cult hero as an undrafted rookie last season.
Meanwhile, Lock left little doubt while speaking with reporters on Wednesday that he's less than pleased he was leapfrogged on the depth chart by DeVito this week. Esiason understands Lock's reaction.
"If I were Drew Lock," Esiason said, "I would be p— off, too. 'What did I come here for? Now all of a sudden you’re passing me over?'"
Daboll reportedly believes DeVito, not Lock, gives the Giants the best chance to earn a victory against the Buccaneers, which is important considering reporters continue to suggest co-owner John Mara could blow things up if New York fails to win at least three of its final seven games of the season.
DeVito's audition may not last very long if he fails to impress while playing in front of a home crowd desperate to have something to cheer for ahead of Thanksgiving.
