Franz Wagner proves Magic have two future stars

Paolo Banchero is the clear-cut star on the Orlando Magic's roster. The former Rookie of the Year has shown consistent growth since entering the NBA and could emerge as a top-20 player sooner rather than later. However, the Magic are currently navigating life without their young star as he continues to recover from a torn oblique.

Fortunately for Orlando, Banchero isn't its only young star. Franz Wagner has been quietly developing next to the Duke product for years. He's also shone during international play during that time. Now, with Banchero sidelined, Wagner is stepping into the limelight.

On Thursday, the fourth-year forward torched the Los Angeles Lakers. He ended the game with 37 points, 11 assists, six rebounds and four steals. He shot 50% from the field and 40% from three-point range. Most importantly, though, Wagner ended the game with a star moment, knocking down a game-winning three against JJ Redick's team.

"It was big time," head coach Jamahl Mosley said during his postgame news conference. "...He's not afraid of big moments. That's what we asked him to do. I could not be happier for this team but for him who puts in such an amazing amount of work. To see that fall. This group, they battled this entire game."

Wagner has endured a turbulent start to life in the NBA. He was seen among the most exciting young talents during his first two years in the NBA. However, he struggled when shooting the ball last season, which lowered some of his stock around the league. Now, though, Wagner is proving that he can be a leading star, which is great news for the Magic.

"I try to do my best to step into that new role and take on the challenge. I think I have come a long way since I came into the league," Wagner told the media. "Last year was at times a struggle for me. Progress is never linear. It is going to continue to go up and down. It's just a matter of staying level-headed throughout it."

Orlando has an exciting young core. Both Banchero and Wagner are future All-Stars. With those two forwards leading the charge, it won't be long until Mosley's team emerges as a postseason threat. And when the Magic do become contenders, they can look back at their rebuilding efforts, knowing their player development played a huge role in their success.
