Bryce Young is showing why he was the No. 1 pick in 2023 draft

Two weeks into the NFL season, Carolina Panthers head coach Dave Canales decided to bench second-year quarterback Bryce Young.

After a rookie season in which he threw 11 touchdowns and 10 interceptions, Young had hoped to get off to a much better start in 2024.

That wasn't the case, as Young had thrown three interceptions and zero touchdowns after the first two games of the season, leading to his benching.

Backup Andy Dalton started the next five games before Young was inserted back as the Panthers starting quarterback.

Since then, Young has been playing the best football of his professional career, and he looks like the player the Panthers hoped they'd get when they selected him No. 1 overall in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Panthers are 2-2 over their last four games with Young back at the helm, with one of those losses being on a last-second field goal against the back-to-back Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Now, those aren't numbers that are going to blow anyone out of the water, but it is much improved from Young's first two starts of the season, and it gives the Panthers and their fans something to be excited about.

Young certainly caught the attention of Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

"I thought he played his tail off. He throws a really good football," Mahomes said. "It's been cool to see him bounce back the last few weeks and play some great football. I know he has it because I've seen it for a long time. He gave us a scare today because he played his tail off."

Reid added that he thought the young Panthers quarterback "did a heck of a job."

Young and 2024 first-round draft pick Xavier Legette have developed a nice connection over the last four games. The two have connected 15 times for 163 yards and two touchdowns since Young's time back as the Panthers starting quarterback.

Legette scored in back-to-back weeks against the Broncos and Saints, marking the first two times the pair had connected on a touchdown-scoring play.

The final six games of the season will be important for Young. Canales has yet to commit to the youngster as the future of the franchise, but a strong finish to the season for Young could get him the endorsement from his head coach as the quarterback of the Panthers for years to come.
