Giants defense on brink of unwanted NFL history in Week 13

The New York Giants (2-9) have been a competitive conundrum, especially on defense.

With pass-rushing talent like nose tackle Dexter Lawrence II, who led the league in sacks for quite some time, and newly acquired defensive end Brian Burns, the Giants had one of the top units in football despite their poor record.

However, the New York secondary has been more questionable and is now on the brink of breaking an unwanted NFL record in Week 13.

According to CBS Sports, the Giants have gone 10 straight games without intercepting a pass. The last time the team did so, rookie linebacker Darius Muasau picked off Minnesota Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold in Week 1.

If New York completes its Week 13 contest against the division-rival Dallas Cowboys on Thanksgiving without recording a defensive interception, the 11-game streak would be the longest in NFL history.

Currently, the team is tied with two others: The 2017 Oakland Raiders and the 1976-77 San Francisco 49ers.

What's even more shocking is that entering Week 12, New York boasted the fourth-best defense in the league against the pass (17th in total defense).

It's tough to determine if it's more impressive that the Giants could be ranked so high by having not recorded an interception since Week 1 or sad, considering it's meant absolutely nothing to the overall success of the team in 2024.

However, the Thanksgiving matchup with Dallas may be just what New York needs to break its defensive slump.

Despite losing seven straight to the Cowboys, the Giants successfully picked off passes in Nov. 2023 from both Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush.

But if it fails to do so Thursday, New York will go down in league annals as part of an extended and unwanted historic streak.
