Houston only made one bucket in the extra period but Alabama's Mark Sears thrived, leading the team with 24 points over the course of the entire contest.
The game, part of the Players Era Festival, hosted in Las Vegas, was a physical battle with 74 free throws taken from 55 fouls called.
Sophomore guard Aden Holloway came off the bench for the Crimson Tide with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists. Mouhamed Dioubate racked up an incredible 16 boards off the bench as well.
Alabama (5-1) entered the season at No. 2 but suffered an early loss to Purdue on Nov. 15, its only blemish on the year so far.
The team now moves on to play Rutgers (4-1) on Wednesday while Houston (3-2) will face Notre Dame (4-1) in the consolation match.
Alabama has two more ranked opponents on its upcoming non-conference schedule, at No. 12 North Carolina (Dec. 4) and at home against No. 21 Creighton (Dec. 14).
