Five epic plays by Penn State's Heisman Trophy-worthy star

Tyler Warren isn’t just Penn State's best player — he’s redefining what it means to be a football player. At 6-foot-6 and 261 pounds, Warren does it all.

A Mackey Award finalist as the nation’s top tight end, he has also taken snaps at quarterback, wide receiver, offensive line, punter and in the backfield. For No. 4 Penn State (10-1, 7-1 Big Ten), he’s not just a weapon; he’s a lifeline.

On Saturday, the No. 4 Nittany Lions host Maryland (4-7, 1-7 Big Ten) in a bid to keep their College Football Playoff hopes rolling. Per FanDuel, Penn State is a 24.5-point favorite as of Wednesday.

A Penn State win over the Terrapins and a Michigan victory over Ohio State on Saturday would send the Nittany Lions to the Big Ten Championship Game against No. 1 Oregon, adding another potential hurdle in PSU's season.

Regardless, one thing is clear: Penn State wouldn’t be where it is without Warren.

“Tyler Warren should be a part of all the conversations that deal with the best football player in college football,” Penn State coach James Franklin told Greg Pickel of Blue White Illustrated. “I don’t think it’s a question. And that’s all of those types of awards, including the Heisman.”

Warren, however, doesn't even appear on FanDuel's latest Heisman odds board. He did, however, recently land at No. 20 on the Big Board of ESPN draft guru Mel Kiper Jr.

Warren’s numbers are staggering. He has a team-high 75 receptions for 910 yards and five touchdowns, rushed for 157 yards and four TDs and even completed two passes for 26 yards and a touchdown.

His versatility makes him a nightmare for defenses — and a dream for highlight reels. Each week, Warren has found new ways to dazzle, leaving defenders spinning and fans in awe.

Ranked in inverse order of greatness, here are his five best moments from a historic season:

5. The one-handed grab vs. Kent State

Warren set the tone for his season in Week 2 with a jaw-dropping one-handed catch near the sideline in a 56-0 win, absorbing contact from a defender. It wasn’t just a highlight; it was a glimpse of what was to come. Even in a lopsided win, Warren’s athleticism stood out, hinting at his evolution from a reliable tight end to an all-around playmaker.

4. The back-shoulder catch vs. Ohio State

Trailing by seven in the fourth quarter, Warren hauled in a 31-yard back-shoulder grab from quarterback Drew Allar. Three plays later, Warren took a direct snap and sprinted 33 yards to Ohio State’s 3-yard line. But in a puzzling series of play calls, Penn State failed to involve Warren on four goal-line plays and ultimately fell 20-13.

3. The leap over Washington

A week after the Ohio State loss, Penn State wasn’t about to make the same mistake. Against Washington, Warren lined up in the backfield and took a direct snap at the 2-yard line. With defenders stacked in front of him, he leaped over the pile for a touchdown, extending the Nittany Lions’ lead in its 35-6 win.

2. Untouched for 49 yards vs. Purdue

Warren’s speed and burst were on full display during a 49-10 win over Purdue. Early in the second half, he took a direct snap, made one cut and left defenders in his dust for a 49-yard touchdown. His combination of size, acceleration and vision made him impossible to stop.

1. The trick-play masterpiece vs. USC

Penn State trailed USC 20-6 early in the third quarter and needed a spark. On a perfectly executed trick play, Warren lined up under center, snapped the ball to Beau Pribula, who lateraled to Allar. Allar found Warren streaking down the middle for a 32-yard touchdown.

The Nittany Lions went on to win 33-30 in overtime, with Warren delivering one of the greatest performances in program history: 17 receptions for 224 yards and a touchdown. His 17 catches tied the FBS record for most receptions in a game by a tight end.
