Washington Wizards rookie Alex Sarr had a career-high performance against the Chicago Bulls on Tuesday night.
In the defeat, the second overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft knocked down four three-pointers, finishing with 20 points. Sarr also contributed seven rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block, all while shooting 63.6 percent from the field, capping off a well-rounded outing.
It was the most efficient shooting night the 19-year-old has had this season, converting 7-of-11 from the field and four of his five attempts from beyond the arc.
This marked Sarr’s second 20-point game of the campaign, tying his career high. In doing so, he became one of only three teenagers in franchise history to record multiple 20-point games, joining teammate Bilal Coulibaly and Bradley Beal.
Despite his improved offensive showing, Wizards head coach Brian Keefe praised Sarr’s defensive effort in the loss.
The 7-foot big man has struggled with consistency early in the season as he adjusts to utilizing his size in the NBA — an understandable challenge for a young rookie.
However, Sarr has now posted two strong performances in a row, following a 17-point, 14-rebound outing against the Indiana Pacers on Nov. 24.
Inconsistencies will likely remain a part of his rookie campaign, but it seems he is beginning to find his footing and hit a groove.
Through 16 games, Sarr is averaging 10.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.9 blocks, although his shooting percentages remain low.
Nevertheless, his block averages place him second among rookies, trailing only Portland’s Donovan Clingan. In points per game, Sarr ranks seventh, and in rebounds, he sits fourth.
Despite his early season struggles, the young big man has earned a reputation as a reliable rim protector and versatile defensive threat, thanks to his size, length and athleticism.
Sarr may not yet be in the Rookie of the Year conversation, but flashes of his potential are becoming evident. He’s growing more comfortable and confident with each passing game.
With the Wizards sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 2-14 record and not expected to contend for many wins, Sarr has the opportunity to take his time, learn and further develop his game.
