During a Tuesday appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show," quarterback Aaron Rodgers said that his "first option" to continue playing next season would be to return to the New York Jets.
Jets receiver Garrett Wilson later touched upon Rodgers' uncertain future.
"I know whatever decision he makes, I'm gonna support him," Wilson said about Rodgers during an interview on "The Zach Gelb Show," Bryan DeArdo of CBS Sports shared. "And all the guys feel the same. We're gonna support him. To play as long as he has and achieve the things he has is no easy feat, man."
Jets owner Woody Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh earlier this season and then parted ways with general manager Joe Douglas last week. Numerous reports have suggested Johnson wants "a change at quarterback" next year in part because he feels Rodgers "is not good anymore." Some believe the future Hall of Famer, who turns 41 years old in December, could struggle to find a new NFL home if the Jets release him in March 2025.
Rodgers dealt with multiple injury issues during the 2022 campaign, suffered a torn Achilles in September 2023, and has been slowed by knee, ankle and hamstring problems this fall. There's been no sign over the past few months that he's capable of ever again playing as he did when he earned Most Valuable Player Award honors for the 2021 campaign.
Earlier this month, former Jets quarterback and current NFL analyst Boomer Esiason generated headlines when he said the team's "locker room is completely fractured" with Rodgers. On Tuesday, Wilson indicated that's not necessarily the case.
"We're all honored to play with him these last two years," Wilson added about Rodgers during the interview. "Regardless, it's been a great career for him, and he knows how I feel. I'd love to have him back. But at the end of the day, he's got to do what's best for him."
As of Wednesday, Rodgers was on track to start when the 3-8 Jets host the 6-5 Seattle Seahawks this Sunday. Beyond that, it's unclear how many in-game snaps Rodgers could take through Week 18 during his final weeks as an active player for the organization.
