The Jacksonville Jaguars fell to 2-9 on what could become a franchise-altering campaign as quarterback Trevor Lawrence missed the past two games with a sprained left (non-throwing) shoulder.
Lawrence spoke with reporters on Wednesday and suggested he could either return to action when Jacksonville hosts the 7-5 Houston Texans this Sunday or undergo a season-ending procedure.
"I think [the sprained AC joint] has been a pretty difficult thing to gauge, honestly, of what's the best path forward. [Surgery is] definitely something that I'm considering and not off the table at all," Lawrence said, as shared by Michael DiRocco of ESPN. "It's something that we're going to have to just [approach] truly day by day, week by week."
Jaguars owner Shad Khan has numerous reasons to want to shut Lawrence down if the 25-year-old won't be fully healthy anytime soon. While Lawrence signed a five-year contract extension worth up to $275M with $142M fully guaranteed this past offseason, many believe Khan will part ways with both head coach Doug Pederson and general manager Trent Baalke in January (if not sooner).
As of Wednesday afternoon, the NFL website showed Jacksonville would have a 2 percent chance to make the playoffs even if the club earns an upset win over Houston.
It's also worth noting that Lawrence didn't play all that well before his setback. According to Pro Football Reference, he heads into Week 13 ranked 24th in the NFL among qualified players with an 87.9 passer rating, tied for 17th with a 46.6 percent passing success rate and 33rd with a 61.3 percent completion percentage for the season. Over nine games, he tossed 11 touchdown passes and six interceptions.
Lawrence insisted he'd like to avoid surgery and wants "to be back out there with my guys and finish the season" despite all the uncertainty hovering over the organization ahead of Thanksgiving.
"I think there's a lot of things to consider, but definitely I'm going to factor in every day and kind of see how I feel and obviously talk to our staff and see how it's progressing. But I feel the best I felt in the past few weeks," Lawrence added during his comments.
Lawrence may want to call Tampa Bay Buccaneers starter Baker Mayfield before making any final decision about whether or not to go under the knife with a postseason berth essentially out of reach.
