Nick Sirianni addresses 'crazy overreaction' to Eagles' 2-2 season start

Some members of the NFL community openly wondered when the Philadelphia Eagles took a 2-2 record into their Week 5 bye if head coach Nick Sirianni could lose his job either in January or during the season.

After the Eagles improved to 10-2 via a 24-19 win at the Baltimore Ravens (8-5) on Sunday afternoon, Sirianni seemed to send a message to those who doubted his team back in early October.

"The panic from anyone was all on the outside," Sirianni told Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated. "What an overreaction of the NFL media...No offense, but what a crazy overreaction. We’re 2–2. And communication’s key to our organization; we make a key of that always. We also make it a key not to listen, when people are telling us how s---y we are or how good we are, we don’t listen, we just do what we need to do to get better, and that’s what that week was for."

Sirianni reportedly landed on the hot seat after the 2023 Eagles suffered a brutal collapse and after his relationship with quarterback Jalen Hurts allegedly became "'fractured' and "unhealthy." Hurts and Sirianni then spent parts of Philadelphia's bye together working on fixes for the 2-2 club, and running back Saquon Barkley has since emerged as a legitimate candidate for multiple awards.

Per StatMuse, Barkley ended this past weekend leading the NFL with 1,766 total yards from scrimmage for the season. As of Monday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Barkley as the betting favorite at -500 odds to win the Offensive Player of the Year Award and second among the betting favorites at +350 odds to claim MVP Award honors.

"Saquon’s gonna get talked about a ton and rightfully so," Sirianni told Breer, "but the tight ends are blocking well. ...We have receivers running off downfield, getting blocks downfield -- there’s really a good one with Parris Campbell and Jahan Dotson doing their part to help Saquon score that touchdown [against Baltimore]. Just a group effort with the entire run game."

On Monday, DraftKings Sportsbook had Philadelphia second behind the Detroit Lions (+150) at +240 odds to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LIX. The Eagles will first look to improve to 11-2 when they host the 3-9 Carolina Panthers this Sunday.
