The New Orleans Pelicans nearly tied the Atlanta Hawks in the fourth quarter Monday night. Then Jalen Johnson asserted himself with a huge dunk.

With the Hawks' lead down to two points early in the fourth quarter, Johnson caught a pass at the free throw line and took it on for a monster dunk. He showed off the athleticism and scoring efficiency that's made Johnson look like a franchise cornerstone for Atlanta this season.

After his poster dunk, Johnson grabbed a rebound and got to the hoop again for a layup. He finished with 19 points, breaking his streak of five straight 20-point efforts, but added five assists on 9-for-14 shooting.
The 22-year-old is now averaging 20.1 points this season, and during this win streak, he's been doing it without many shot attempts. That ability to score with limited touches is perfect for a forward playing alongside the ball-dominant Trae Young.
In the past four games, Johnson is shooting 62.55 on only 14 shots per game, helped by going 50% on three-pointers. He's improved across the board this season, increasing his rebounds from 8.7 to 9.9 and his assists from 3.6 to 5.5, while blocking 50% more shots.
He's playing at a borderline All-Star level, as the Hawks are showing incredible depth at the wings.
Johnson's nearly averaging a double-double. 21-year-old Dyson Daniels is leading the NBA with three steals per game. After a slow start, No. 1 pick Zaccharie Risacher has scored 13.8 points on 53.8% shooting during the streak. And the Hawks are 8-3 when DeAndre Hunter and his 18.2 points per game (and career-high 40% three-point shooting) are in the lineup.
Now that the Hawks are healthy, they've moved up to sixth place in the Eastern Conference. Young's plethora of weapons has left him leading the NBA in assists. Racking up dimes is easier when there's a player like Johnson who can sky for Young's alley-oops.

After a summer where the Hawks traded Dejounte Murray (for a package of players and picks that included Daniels), the team looked like it was rebuilding. Now that deal looks like a smart reload.
Meanwhile, Murray shot 2-for-15 Monday and the Pelicans fell to 4-18. The only consolation for New Orleans is that they traded the Hawks the Lakers' 2025 first-round pick rather than their own.
Besides, Atlanta doesn't have to go star-hunting in the draft. It looks like they've already found one in Johnson.
