Zion Williamson hasn't played for the New Orleans Pelicans since Nov. 6. He is currently dealing with a hamstring injury. To add insult to injury (pun intended), the Pelicans are 4-17 to begin the season.
According to two-time NBA champion Jrue Holiday, Williamson must adjust his on-court approach once he returns. The Boston Celtics star believes Williamson could become a defensive bedrock for New Orleans, which would help him finally live up to his potential.
"I think Zion is one of the most gifted players I’ve ever seen," Holiday said during a recent appearance on the "Podcast P with Paul George" podcast. "Athletic ability, how he can get to the rim by people, and I feel like sometimes it's about fit, and maybe I don’t know if they have to adjust the fit to him down there or maybe slide out and have a different fit with somebody else...For him, I’d have him play a little more defense. That’s not a knock on him. I think that would make him the talent that he is. It would elevate his game. Offensively I think he’s got it; I think he does what he’s supposed to do."
Holiday has made a career out of being an elite defensive presence. Yes, he's a high-level offensive player, but his championship pedigree is due to the versatility he provides as a defensive linchpin. Williamson would be wise to follow suit.
There's no denying that Williamson is an elite offensive talent. However, his above-the-rim style of play is a significant factor in his consistent injury struggles.
By adjusting his play style to become more focused on defense and playmaking, Williamson could potentially lower the impact on his body, allowing him to be consistently available. He would also enhance his team's chances of success because, without a high-level defense, teams rarely win a championship.
Williamson's time with the Pelicans is running out. He's never reached the high points many had hoped for when he was drafted with the first overall pick in 2019. A fresh start elsewhere could be what both he and New Orleans need. However, he would likely encounter the same issues without altering his approach.
As a defensive-minded forward, Williamson can rebuild his reputation. He will become known as a team-first guy who can win games on both sides of the ball. He needs that sort of narrative switch. Otherwise, he may find it hard to shake the current media scrutiny, especially if he continues to spend more time on the injury report than on the court.
Holiday is highly respected in the NBA. If Williamson is wise, he will listen to the advice and adjust accordingly. For now, though, he just needs to get back on the court and stay healthy. From there, only time will tell how things play out.
