Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin provided little insight into how they're addressing George Pickens' recurring penalties.
In Sunday's 44-38 win against the Cincinnati Bengals, the third-year wide receiver was flagged for taunting and firing a finger gun after a catch. His second penalty erased a 36-yard gain.
"I'm not going to give any detail about what goes on behind the scenes in terms of his growth and development," Tomlin told the media. "That's my style, and I'm going to be really consistent in it. Being transparent with you guys doesn't necessarily help or accelerate the growth process, and that's my agenda, not necessarily feeding the beast."
Tomlin already called out Pickens following the Steelers' win over the Bengals. The coach said Pickens must "grow up," so he probably feels there's no need to reiterate his message.
Whether Pickens, 23, listens remains unclear. He refused to take accountability for his penalties against Cincinnati. Per The Athletic's Larry Holder and Mike DeFabo, Pickens said he was pointing for a first down on his second penalty, and officials misunderstood his celebration.
Regardless, Pickens must demonstrate better discipline. Per Pro Football Focus, the former Georgia Bulldog has committed 12 penalties in three seasons with Pittsburgh. He has four in 12 games this season, tied for the seventh most among WRs.
Pickens and Browns cornerback Greg Newsome II also had a postgame altercation in Pittsburgh's Week 12 loss to Cleveland.
Pickens plays an integral role in the Steelers offense. He leads Pittsburgh (9-3) in targets (90), receptions (55) and receiving yards (850) and is third in TD catches (three).
The Steelers need him as they enter a critical stretch. Pittsburgh aims to clinch a playoff spot and win their first AFC North title since 2020. If Pickens makes more boneheaded mistakes, that could be costly.
