Whispers resurfaced earlier this week suggesting that New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers and former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick could link up with the New York Giants during the upcoming offseason.
Rodgers, who joined the Jets via a trade from the Green Bay Packers in the spring of 2023, made some interesting comments while speaking with reporters about his uncertain future on Wednesday.
"I just re-did my house here in Jersey," Rodgers said, as shared by Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk. "My goal was to play a few more years here, but we’ll see."
A Wednesday report suggested that Jets owner Woody Johnson could move on from Rodgers even "before the end of this season." Johnson seemingly wants "a fresh start at general manager, head coach and quarterback" next year after he parted ways with both Robert Saleh and Joe Douglas during the campaign.
Last week, Rodgers said that the Jets would be his "first option" if he ultimately decides to continue playing next year. Per Andy Vasquez of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com, the 41-year-old pointed out on Wednesday that he merely stated that "would be my first choice" and that it would be "fantastic" if Johnson and the team's new front office want him to stay. There's currently no indication that will be the case.
Rodgers has been slowed by injuries to both his knees, a low ankle sprain and a hamstring issue this fall coming off the torn Achilles he suffered in September 2023. He played with a broken thumb on his throwing hand in the fall of 2022 before he injured his ribs during that season.
He'll enter this weekend ranked in the bottom half of the league in multiple passing categories for 2024.
"I’d like to be healthy," Rodgers added during his Wednesday comments. He also acknowledged that he could need at least "a good month to get away from it" before he makes any decision about his playing future this winter.
As for the Giants, they released former starting quarterback Daniel Jones last month. Numerous reporters have said that team co-owner John Mara could move on from both head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen in January if the 2-10 club fails to notch a couple more wins over its last five games.
Meanwhile, Belichick earned his first two career Super Bowl rings while with the Giants from 1979 through the 1990 campaign and allegedly still admires the organization. Even if Big Blue uses a high draft pick to grab a quarterback, Belichick presumably could ask Rodgers to mentor that rookie next season.
