Former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Vrabel earned three Super Bowl rings playing under Bill Belichick with the New England Patriots from 2001 through the 2008 season. Thus, some believe Vrabel would listen if Belichick said to avoid becoming the next head coach of the New York Jets this offseason.
During the latest edition of the "Flight Deck" podcast, Jets reporter Rich Cimini of ESPN addressed that very topic.
"Many people assume that Vrabel wouldn't even consider the Jets, because what's he going to do? He's going to call up one of his mentors, Bill Belichick, and ask him his opinion of the Jets," Cimini said, as shared by Rich Jones and Matthew Neschis of The Mirror. "And we know what Belichick's going to say. He's going to trash the Jets and say, 'Don't take that job if it's offered.' But I've talked to people who know Vrabel, and he has told friends that he would consider the Jets as a possibility as long as he likes the [general manager] that they pick. So he says he doesn't care what Belichick thinks. He'll judge the situation based on its own merit."
Belichick famously resigned as head coach of the Jets in January 2000 without having ever coached a game for the organization and has suggested throughout the years via numerous comments that he's not all that fond of Jets owner Woody Johnson.
Meanwhile, Johnson parted ways with head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas earlier this season. Multiple reports have said Johnson will move on from quarterback Aaron Rodgers either before or after the ongoing campaign ends.
As for Vrabel, he went 54-45 across six seasons with the Titans and won the Associated Press Coach of the Year Award for the 2021 campaign. He's currently working as a consultant with the Cleveland Browns but is expected to interview with other clubs in January. The Browns reportedly will retain head coach Kevin Stefanski through at least the upcoming offseason.
"I think Vrabel would be an outstanding choice for the Jets," Cimini added. "He's experienced, he's won in Tennessee, he's a tough guy - I think he'd need to be tough in the New York market."
If nothing else, Cimini's update seemingly slams the door shut on any idea that Belichick could accept a call from Johnson regarding the Jets' gig before Christmas.
