Per multiple reports, New York Jets owner Woody Johnson could part ways with quarterback Aaron Rodgers even before this season ends as part of a franchise restructuring that will include Johnson hiring a new head coach and new general manager.
Veteran wide receiver Davante Adams joined the Jets from the Las Vegas Raiders via an October trade and spoke with reporters on Wednesday about his uncertain future.
"I would love to be a part of this football team. I love these guys...I'd love to go to war with these guys," Adams said, as shared by Julia Stumbaugh of Bleacher Report. "But it's a business, and there's a lot of pieces contractually, and obviously with Aaron's future and a lot of things that I can't control. So we've just got to finish this year off strong, and hopefully, we do enough to where everybody's feeling like it's the right thing to do for us to stay here."
The Jets were 2-3 when Johnson fired head coach Robert Saleh, and Johnson's hope at the time was that Adams could help what became a 2-4 side turn things around. Instead, Rodgers has largely disappointed with his play, and the Jets fell to 3-9 this past weekend.
ESPN's Rich Cimini and others have noted that Adams would have to rework his contract to avoid becoming a salary-cap casualty when the new league year opens in March. It's no secret that the Jets acquired Adams because he's close with Rodgers going back to their days as teammates with the Green Bay Packers, and many have assumed Johnson wants to fully move on from the Rodgers era as soon as possible.
Considering all that's gone wrong over the past two months, one couldn't be blamed for thinking that Adams regrets pushing for a trade to the Jets.
"As far as making the move, I don't regret it, not even one bit," Adams said on Wednesday, per Jack Bell of the team's website. "Obviously, nobody in here, nobody really period, knows what I was going through and knows the reasons why it led to having to be this way. But I don't regret it at all. I got to come here and become a part of a new team, and got welcomed with open arms, got to play with one of my favorite quarterbacks, one of my best friends."
As for what could be next for Adams, recent rumors linked Rodgers with a New York Giants team that could need a bridge option at quarterback next year. Not for nothing, but Adams could serve as a great mentor for Giants rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers in 2025.
