Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio raised some eyebrows earlier this week when he suggested that the Chicago Bears call the San Francisco 49ers about a possible trade for 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
During a Friday appearance on San Francisco sports radio station KNBR, 49ers general manager John Lynch left little doubt about his feelings about such chatter.
"I sit back, and I try to be focused, but I've found the whole discussion on Kyle and some of the stuff rather comical," Lynch said, David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone shared. "We have won four of the last five division championships. We've been in two Super Bowls. Look, the standard here is to win championships, and we've fallen short of that. I understand. But we have an excellent head coach. And the fact people are talking about stuff like that, I do find it comical."
As Lynch mentioned, Shanahan has guided the Niners to four NFC Championship Games and two Super Bowl appearances since the start of the 2019 season. San Francisco lost both Super Bowl contests to the Kansas City Chiefs, and the 2024 49ers will enter this Sunday's home game versus the 4-8 Bears at 5-7 and in the middle of an injury crisis.
Bonilla noted in a different piece that Florio said during a Wednesday KNBR appearance that he felt Shanahan "looks exhausted" and may want a "reset," considering the franchise's window to win a Super Bowl with its current core has seemingly closed.
"So now, we feel like we're at a point where, for the nucleus of veterans, the sun is setting," Florio explained at that time. "There's going to be a future that no one really knows what it will hold. Can they go out and find a collection of players like the ones they've had?"
Even if Florio is right, Shanahan has given no public indication he wants to leave a 49ers side that will likely soon undergo a roster restructuring. Meanwhile, Lynch hinted he wouldn't entertain offers for Shanahan if the Bears or other franchises came calling.
"We're 100% behind Kyle and what he brings to our organization," Lynch added during Friday's conversation.
Also on Friday, ESPN's Dan Graziano linked the Bears with Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. A possible Bears-49ers trade may be fun to talk about ahead of Christmas, but Chicago fans shouldn't get their hopes up about such a transaction becoming a reality.
