Charles Barkley rips Rockets after controversial win over Warriors

You know the Warriors were robbed when their most notorious detractor, Charles Barkley, comes to their defense.

After the Rockets' 91-90 victory in the NBA Cup quarterfinal, Barkley admitted that the referees handed the game to Ime Udoka's team during TNT's "Inside the NBA" telecast.

"They're not ready for prime time because the refs had to give them this game tonight," Barkley said of the Rockets.

Barkley further highlighted how lucky the Rockets were by pointing to their mental mistakes down the stretch of the close game.

Any objective onlooker could see that the Warriors were victims of daylight robbery Wednesday when the Rockets were granted two foul shots with 3.5 seconds left over a loose ball foul (since the Warriors were in the bonus). With a 90-89 lead, the Warriors were on the verge of victory when Stephen Curry's missed three led to a scramble for a loose ball after Gary Payton II secured possession of a rebound.

As Payton II tried to pass the ball, a scramble ensued between Kuminga and Green. Kuminga was called for a personal foul, triggering a lot of anger from Steve Kerr. As most NBA fans know, referees typically call a jump ball in such scenarios where neither Kuminga nor Green had clear possession of the ball.

In the NBA's pool report, crew chief Bill Kennedy tried to justify the foul on Kuminga.

"The defender [Kuminga] makes contact with the neck and shoulder area [of Green], warranting a personal foul to be called," he said.

Barkley's "Inside the NBA" co-panelists all agreed that the refs should have called a jump ball in the situation.

"The problem we fans have with referees is consistency," said Shaquille O'Neal. "I agree with Steve. It was a wrestling match with a lot of missed calls."

Kerr will likely be fined for his comments despite his justified outburst. The NBA has some answering to do about its inconsistent officiating, especially in critical junctures of high-stakes games. As Kerr rightly said, even an elementary school referee wouldn't have called a loose ball foul 80 feet from the basket with the game on the line.
