It's a fascinating move. Bill Belichick, a 72-year old winner of eight Super Bowls (six as head coach of the New England Patriots and two as defensive coordinator of the New York Giants) is doing something he's never done before.
It's been said that you can't teach an old dog new tricks, but can you teach a lifelong NFL coach how to be a head coach at the college football level? Who knows, but we're all about to find out, because there was fire behind the smoke that were the rumors of Belichick's interest in the head coaching gig at North Carolina.
It's now official. Belichick has signed a five-year deal to coach UNC football, and the sports world is reacting.
The hot takes run the gambit from failure to striking success for North Carolina and Belichick, but one of the more honest reactions has come from Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian. This is simply going to be interesting to see.
“Fascinated. I’m fascinated by it," Sarkisian said on "The Rich Eisen Show" (h/t On3). "Obviously, a ton of respect for coach Belichick and the job he’s done his entire career. I think we’re all better coaches, quite frankly, because of what he’s been able to do and studying him. Whether it’s offense, defense, management of rosters, all the stuff. And obviously, my time with coach [Nick] Saban and the connection with those two."
Sarkisian was an offensive analyst and then briefly the interim offensive coordinator for Nick Saban at Alabama in 2016. Saban was Belichick's defensive coordinator from 1991-94 when the latter was the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
More than anything, though, Saban and Belichick's coaching style and "do your job" mentality have always been compared to each other.
Either way, Sarkisian is right. This is going to be fascinating to watch.
