NFL insider gives grim outlook for Antonio Pierce's time with Raiders

It appears Antonio Pierce's time as the head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders could be coming to an end.

It doesn't help when star edge-rusher Maxx Crosby is already out for the season because of an ankle injury. Then there is uncertainty if Aidan O'Connell can go Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons.

Despite the injuries, it's a lost season for the 2-11 Raiders, and ESPN's Adam Schefter suggested Monday morning that when owner Mark Davis didn't vouch for Pierce at the owner's meetings, that was a telling sign.

"I think it was pretty apparent that Antonio Pierce's future is unsettled," Schefter told Pat McAfee. "He was asked about the general manager (Tom Telesco), the head coach. He said he's viewing them separately, not as a package deal with the Raiders. He also said, 'Yeah, I'll get to everything after the season.

"If an owner is going to stand behind a guy, he stands behind a guy. Mark Davis didn't stand behind Antonio Pierce. Until he does, I think that's the question."

Pierce was named interim head coach last season, replacing Josh McDaniels, who was fired during the season.

Pierce led somewhat of a resurgence for the Raiders, including a win over the Kansas City Chiefs at GEHA Stadium.

This season, Pierce and the Raiders have had little luck, as they missed out on drafting a quarterback in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Instead, the Raiders relied on Gardner Minshew, who beat out O'Connell at training camp.

Minshew (broken collarbone) is out for the season, and O'Connell is nursing a knee injury.

"It's also a little bit unfair to AP considering all the quarterback drama that they've been through," Schefter said. "They haven't had a quarterback this year. Was it their fault that the six quarterbacks went right in front of them in the draft, and none of them were left when it was their turn? They didn't have the type of quarterback play that I think it's fair to judge Antonio Pierce on,  but it certainly didn't sound last week like he is an absolute lock to be back at all."
