Despite a high ankle sprain, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is still trying to play against the Houston Texans on Saturday.
Mahomes suffered the injury in a 21-7 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 15. In a Tuesday news conference, the QB said he will test his ankle throughout the week before determining his status.
"That's the reason why you play this game, is push to play. So, I'll get to work in practice and try to push it to see where I can get to," Mahomes said. "If I feel like I can play and go out there and win a football game, I'll play. And If I don't feel like that's the best-case scenario, I'll let guys like Carson [Wentz] play."
Wentz — a former second-team All-Pro — posted a 47-45-1 regular-season starting record in his first eight seasons with the Colts, Commanders, Rams and Eagles. Against Cleveland, Wentz completed 2-of-2 passes for 20 yards.
However, Wentz may flounder against Houston's stingy defense. The Texans (9-5) rank ninth in the league in points allowed (21.4) and sixth in passing yards allowed (196.9).
Although he faces a tricky matchup, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid insisted the team and coaching staff have "full confidence in [Wentz]."
"He's got a great feel for this offense. Very smart big arm," Reid said of Wentz. "I like the way he carries himself. I like everything about him. He should be starting in the league somewhere, so he's a heck of a player."
As of Tuesday, ESPN Bet lists Houston as a one-point favorite in its road game. Even if Wentz doesn't pull off the upset, the Chiefs (13-1) could still clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC. Plus, protecting Mahomes is far more important.
