Celtics wrecked by technical fouls in loss to Bulls

The Chicago Bulls played surprisingly well against the Boston Celtics Thursday night. A flurry of fourth-quarter technicals against the Celtics helped them put the game away.

After Jaylen Brown's jumper cut the Bulls' lead to 99-96 with just over five minutes left, he and Payton Pritchard tied up Ayo Dosunmu when the Bulls guard grabbed a rebound. The referees ruled that Pritchard should jump instead of Brown, which is when Mazzulla ran onto the court to argue.

That was one technical. When Brown argued with the referee, he was hit with another technical, which led to a second successful Zach LaVine free throw. On the subsequent possession, LaVine made a three-pointer, and Chicago's lead was back up to eight points.

Two minutes later, Jayson Tatum picked up his fourth foul and was slapped with a technical for arguing. LaVine made another free throw, part of his game-high 36 points, and the Bulls held on to win, 117-108.

Mazzulla was quite heated after the game, seeking out the officials to continue his earlier discussion. However, after the game, a calmer Mazzulla said he was "just trying to wish them Merry Christmas."

After the game, Brown claimed he got his technical foul for complaining about Mazzulla's technical, making it effectively a meta-technical.

Regardless of the rightness of their arguments, the Celtics blew their comeback by blowing their tops at the refs. It's hard to win against any team when you have more techs than Peter Thiel's stock portfolio. LaVine and the Bulls made the Celtics pay.
