Since Carmelo Anthony's days, the New York Knicks have been searching for a star name. Back then, the goal was to give Anthony an elite running mate and a shot at a championship. Since then, the goal has been to bring back those memorable nights in Madison Square Garden.
It may have taken decades, but the Knicks finally have that star, and no, his name isn't Jalen Brunson. During the summer, the Knicks swung for the fences to add Mikal Bridges to the rotation, sending out a fistful of draft picks to secure a player who could fill a much-needed glue-guy role. Shortly after, the Knicks came out of left field with a blockbuster that brought Karl-Anthony Towns into the fold.
In 25 short games, Towns has emerged as the star New York has been waiting on, the elite talent to ease the pressure on Brunson while thriving under the spotlights that come with playing in one of the hottest basketball markets on the planet. His stats (25 points, 14.2 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game) are clear indicators that Towns is no shrinking violet.
“In New York, we have seen the man KAT. In Minnesota, we saw the young man, the young boy that was trying to figure it out,” Anthony said on his "7PM In Brooklyn" podcast. “He got here. Now, he got to lock in.”

If you want to know how important Towns can be to a team, take a look at how the Timberwolves are performing right now. Last season's Western Conference finalists look lost. Their spacing has been an issue all season, and their ability to control the boards has been drastically reduced.
For those watching from afar, it's easy to question whether Minnesota was ever really Anthony Edwards' team or if he got the praise for the work Towns was doing in the margins.
New York doesn't have that problem. The fans know what Towns brings to the rotation and understand the symbiotic relationship between him and Brunson. They need each other to thrive. Perhaps that's why the eye test tells us they're one of the best pick-and-roll duos in the NBA. It also helps that Towns is fifth in scoring when operating as the roll man in screening actions and Brunson is sixth when operating as the ball-handler in those same scenarios.
After years of waiting, the Knicks finally have a star that can thrive in New York. Actually, they have two. Still, the next step will be the hardest: waiting for the rest of the roster to gel and build winning habits.
A championship might not be in the cards this season, but if Towns and Brunson stay healthy, it won't be long until MSG is welcoming Conference Finals and NBA Finals basketball back to its hardwood.
