Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin was the biggest loser of the CFP first round

It took a special performance, but Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was the biggest loser of the first round of the College Football Playoff.

Yes, he was even worse than 9-seed Tennessee (10-3), which sustained a humiliating 42-17 loss at 8-seed Ohio State (11-2) to wrap up a weekend of lopsided games.

Throughout the first round — except for during the Vols' shellacking — Kiffin trolled (as he often does) the playoff selection committee for the uncompetitive games.

"Really exciting competitive game," he wrote as 7-seed Notre Dame (12-1) handed 10-seed Indiana (11-2) a 27-17 loss.

"Way to keep us on the edge of our seats Committee .... Riveting," Kiffin shared while 6-seed Penn State (12-2) dominated 11-seed SMU (11-3), 38-10.

Most coaches are smart enough to keep their mouths shut when their teams aren't part of the conversation.

Kiffin's childish, mocking comments against Indiana and SMU, teams that deserved to be in the playoff over Ole Miss (9-3) — which Kentucky (4-8) bullied — only reminded us of Kiffin's poor coaching job this season.

The Rebels spent heavily in the transfer portal to bring in defensive talent, including lineman Walter Nolen and edge Princely Umanmielen, but the money was wasted on Kiffin.

In addition to losing one of the worst Kentucky teams in years, he also lost to Brian Kelly's worst LSU (8-4) squad, blowing a double-digit lead in Death Valley in a 29-26 overtime loss.

Ole Miss also lost to Florida (8-5), which was trounced earlier this season by third-place ACC finisher Miami (10-2).

As Fox Sports college football analyst Joel Klatt sniped, "If your team played half as well as you tweet you would likely be in."

Kiffin is a horrible messenger for CFP criticisms.

Based on its performance this season, Ole Miss certainly didn't belong over Indiana or SMU.

While those programs' CFP losses were bad, forgive us for preferring to watch them instead of Ole Miss faking injuries for four quarters. Talk about riveting.

Kiffin would have been wise to stay silent, much like he did while the Volunteers were being hammered by the Buckeyes.

His lack of derisive comments for conference-mate Tennessee showed his previous criticisms were in bad faith. Kiffin doesn't care about the playoffs; he's simply another SEC sycophant more interested in winning in the court of public opinion than on the football field.

Kiffin ended Saturday with his biggest self-own, re-sharing a quote he'd realize was about him if he had any self-awareness.

In a (bad) poem about ignoring outside critics, the final couplet reads: "It's always the people going nowhere that have something to say."
