Tottenham Hotspur suffered a big defeat at the hands of runaway Premier League leaders Liverpool on Sunday as the Reds claimed a 6-3 result to head into Christmas as the table toppers with a four-point advantage over second-placed Chelsea. Spurs were thoroughly outplayed and there was not much to write home about their display from a defensive viewpoint.
With another defeat, this time one of the heaviest in his Tottenham career, there were questions raised against Ange Postecoglou’s tactical setup with many believing that it is too offensive. The media also quizzed him regarding his thoughts on how the team plays, though the manager was quick in dismissing suggestions of a possible change in his post-match interaction with the reporters.
Australian outlet ABC quoted him saying the following words.
“I think I’ve been really, really patient the last 18 months, sitting up here answering the same questions over and over again. If people want me to change my approach, it’s not going to change. We’re doing it for a reason, we’re doing it because we think it’ll help us be successful.”
Ange Postecoglou has succeeded with his tactical views for the better part of the last 18 months at Tottenham Hotspur and even in a trophy-laden tenure with Scottish giants Celtic. To let a series of losses bother him is ludicrous thinking by fans as well as the media, especially when the team has been massively depleted with injuries since the campaign.
With the former Australia national team’s head coach’s offensive mindset, Tottenham are the same team that have scored 11 times across three matches against Manchester United and Manchester City this season, while it is no mean feat to hit three versus Liverpool either, especially given that they are one of England’s best defensive sides this season.
Postecoglou’s patience with the media seems to be wearing thin and rightly so, and it remains to be seen how many more questions will be raised against him when the problems at Tottenham are far graver than the manager.
