What began as a hyped showdown between 76ers center Joel Embiid and Spurs center Victor Wembanyama ended with 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey as the game's biggest star.
Maxey drilled a step-back three off the back rim with under a minute remaining in a one-point game of an eventual 111-106 win.

Maxey was probable (illness) before the game but finished 12-for-25, including 5-for-11 from beyond the arc, 10 rebounds, eight assists and three steals.
Sixers injury report, as of 10:30 this morning:
— Derek Bodner (@DerekBodnerNBA) December 23, 2024
- Eric Gordon: Out (left oral surgery)
- Ricky Council IV: Questionable (right knee soreness)
- Tyrese Maxey: Probable (illness)
Jared McCain (left knee meniscus surgery) remains out as well.
He was massive for Philadelphia following Embiid's second-quarter ejection after he received a double-tech for arguing an offensive foul call.
Embiid ended the game with nine points, while Wembanyama led the Spurs (15-14, 10th in Western Conference) with 26 points.
The 76ers (10-17, 12th in Eastern Conference) will need more big games from Maxey — plus Embiid to stay on the court — to overcome their horrid start to the season.
Philadelphia began the year 3-14 but has seven wins in its last 10 games.
Maxey missed six games earlier this season due to a hamstring injury and returned on Nov. 20. Since returning, he's shot much better from three-point range, which has been crucial for the 76ers, who rank 29th in scoring (105.9 points per game entering Monday).
In his last 14 games, he's shot 36.9% from three-point range after shooting just 28.6% from deep in his first seven games.
Maxey is heating up just as the Sixers are. It's probably not a coincidence.
