Illinois' 21-17 win over South Carolina in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on Tuesday became surprisingly heated, and at times left Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer extremely heated.
Things really popped off in the second half when Illinois head coach Bret Bielema was seen taunting the South Carolina sidelines during an injury timeout.
After the game, Beamer said he had never seen anything like it in all of his years of football and called it "bush league."
Beamer went on to say that he thought Bielema’s reaction was “bush-league.”

“I’ve got a ton of respect for Coach Bielema. I've really enjoyed being around him this week. We're 2 competitive guys, but I thought that was uncalled for, especially when his own player is on the… https://t.co/seJRFGH9zJ
Beamer was already upset during the game because Illinois was taking advantage of a loophole in the rule book regarding substitutions. Along with substituting late on defense, Illinois players were slowly leaving the field allowing the play clock to wind down. At one point Beamer had to burn a timeout because the substitution process was taking too long.
At one point in the third quarter with an injured Illini player on the field, Bielema walked across the field to check on his player and could be seen making the officials substitution signal (both arms held out wide) toward the South Carolina bench.
Beamer became enraged and had to be restrained from going after Bielema.

This is one of those things where multiple things can be true at the same time.
On one hand, Illinois did nothing illegal or wrong with its substitutions. There was nothing against the rules and it was allowed by the officials. Both teams were playing under the same rules, and Beamer even acknowledged after the game that they do it as well.
But Beamer also had every right to be angered by the taunts from Bielema. Players get penalized for taunting the opposing team. The coach should not be exempt from that. Doing that during an injury timeout only adds another layer to it.
It certainly added some intrigue to a game that would have otherwise probably been overlooked.
