10 questions asked about Arizona State's Cam Skattebo, Peach Bowl MVP

Even though Arizona State's College Football Playoff run has come to a close after being eliminated by Texas on New Year's Day, the performance of Sun Devils running back Cam Skattebo continues to be one of the high points of this year's postseason action.

The senior likely elevated his status in the mind of NFL scouts in the double-overtime loss to Texas as he was responsible for 269 total yards and three touchdowns. He also showed his toughness and leadership during the game, helping ignite the Sun Devils after a slow offensive showing through the game's first three quarters.

So what do you need to know about Skattebo? Here are 10 nuggets of knowledge.

Was Skattebo a force throughout 2024?

Helping pace Arizona State to the Big 12 title, Skattebo racked up career-highs in both rushing (1,711) and receiving yardage (605). He was second in the country in rushing yards, trailing only Boise State's Ashton Jeanty (2,601), who finished second in Heisman Trophy voting.

Did Skattebo get any Heisman votes?

Absolutely. He finished fifth in the Heisman voting (behind Colorado's Travis Hunter, Jeanty, Oregon's Dillon Gabriel and Miami's Cam Ward) and received three first-place votes.

What was his signature moment of 2024?

Outside of what he did in the Peach Bowl, Skattebo's best game came in Arizona State's second game, a nonconference win over Mississippi State. He carried the ball a season-high 33 times for 262 yards and also caught three passes for 35 yards, earning AP National Player of the Week honors as the Sun Devils posted their first-ever win over a team from the SEC.

Back to the Peach Bowl, wasn't that MVP honor unique?

It was as no other player from a losing team had ever been named as the game's MVP in its 26-year history.

What other games stood out for Skattebo?

Including the postseason, Skattebo topped the 100-yard mark in eight games. One of his lowest totals of the season came in a 30-22 loss to Texas Tech as he was held to 60 yards on 18 carries. While the Red Raiders stopped him on the ground, however, he had six catches for 117 yards. That was one of two games (Oklahoma State with 121 yards) where he went over 100 yards in receiving.

Did Skattebo always play at Arizona State?

No. His first two seasons were spent at FCS member Sacramento State. During his sophomore year, he rushed for 1,372 yards and seven touchdowns and also threw for a touchdown on his way to earning Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year honors.

How did Skattebo end up at Sacramento State?

Sacramento State was the only program to offer Skattebo a scholarship after he graduated from Rio Linda High School, located in the suburbs of Sacramento.

So Skattebo didn't have solid football numbers in high school?

Actually, he put on a show, rushing for 6,192 career rushing yards and 69 touchdowns for Rio Linda.

Has Skattebo always played running back?

Yes ... with a catch. He started at quarterback for the Sun Devils in a 2023 matchup against Oregon, becoming the fifth player to line up under center for ASU that season. He completed 2-of-6 passes for 45 yards as one of three players who quarterbacked against the Ducks.

Where could Skattebo land in the NFL?

No one knows that, even though he would fit in with some teams, but Arizona State head coach Kenny Dillingham hopes he stays nearby.
