Could Giants GM Joe Schoen make massive gamble to save his job?

The New York Giants are just a couple of days away from their season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles and could very well finish with a record of 3-14. This has been a dreadful year for New York, one that could cost general manager Joe Schoen his job.

Just a week ago, the Giants were in place for the first overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Thanks to their heroics against the Colts in a 45-33 Week 17 win, they have dropped to fourth overall, likely upsetting some fans.

That's because those fans wanted the Giants to have their pick at either Miami QB Cam Ward or Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders, the top two prospects at their position. Now, with a pick that could very well be outside of their range, Schoen may get desperate to save the team and his job.

With so much pressure coming from the fans and owner John Mara, one could predict Schoen taking a massive risk in order to secure one of the two QB prospects. Sure, the Giants could recapture the first pick, but in all likelihood, they will land within the three-to-five range, potentially knocking themselves out of the Ward/Sanders sweepstakes.

If this happens, Schoen may be tempted enough to trade the kitchen sink for the first overall pick. What could this cost? At bare minimum, it would likely require sending away the Giants' 2025 first-round pick. Anything else is just speculation, but some have made their guesses.

Sure, the Giants could retain whatever pick they earn and select the best player available, a route Schoen usually takes, but with so much at stake after moving on from Daniel Jones, it seems high time for Schoen to make a big-time splash. He is no stranger to trading up and has done so multiple times in his short tenure as the general manager of the Giants. However, he has yet to do so to this magnitude.

Is paying such a hefty price for Ward and Sanders, two players with many questions surrounding their abilities, going to be worth it? Only time will tell.

One thing is for certain, though: Schoen must fix the Giants' massive problem at quarterback before the start of the 2025 season.
