Jerry Jones comes up with a new justification for trading Micah Parsons — and it falls flat

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been adamant that the team will be better off in the short term without Micah Parsons, and he now says he made the deal with Dak Prescott in mind.

During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Friday, Jones was asked about Parsons and the Green Bay Packers improving to 2-0 with another win over a tough opponent on Thursday night. The 82-year-old said the success of Green Bay's defense through the first two weeks of the season has not made him question the decision to trade Parsons.

Jones reiterated that the Cowboys believe in Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark, whom they acquired in the Parsons trade along with two first-round draft picks. He also said part of his goal with the deal was to maximize Prescott's championship window.

"(Parsons is) an outstanding player. But we should be able to get, as a matter of fact, we've got one on the field (Clark). And of course, people say, 'But he's no Micah.' Well, I'm not going to debate that at all because Micah is very, very special," Jones said, via Nick Shook of NFL.com. "But I'll tell you this right now, by the time this happens, and as we look forward to Dak's time, when we made his contract and we look forward, this was the best way to maximize our chance to get a Super Bowl for Dak."

Packers fans are grateful to Jones

Fans in Green Bay had a clever way of taunting Jones following their team's 27-18 win over the Washington Commanders on Thursday night. They broke out with chants of "thank you, Jerry" when Parsons appeared on the Amazon postgame set. Jones was asked about that on Friday, and he said he is "all for them enjoying and chanting anything that they want" after the way the Packers have played early on.

It is clear that Jones has no intention of backing down from his stance on the Parsons trade. At this point, his argument will only carry weight if the Cowboys make a deep playoff run. Jones has been around long enough to know that, and he is sticking with his narrative.

Parsons has made an early impact in Green Bay

Although he has been somewhat limited because of a back injury, Parsons has already left his mark on the Packers defense. Parsons had a sack in Green Bay's dominant Week 1 win over the Detroit Lions. He had a half-sack against Washington on Thursday night. Parsons has had at least 12 sacks in all four of his NFL seasons, and he is off to a great start with his new team.
