The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals have been the closest partners in the MLB offseason.
Cardinals president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom has helped his former team with the likes of Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras, all while shedding plenty of cash off his payroll. Now, he could give the Red Sox another hand by giving them Brendan Donovan, one of the most sought-after trade targets of the offseason.
According to a report by Will Sammon and Katie Woo of The Athletic, both parties have picked up trade talks to get Donovan to Fenway Park.
"The Cardinals and Red Sox have discussed a trade for Donovan, as The Athletic reported last week, with Boston looking for an additional middle infielder," the report read.
Of course, the Cardinals should be in no rush to get a deal done. Donovan is under club control through 2027, and he's fresh off his first All-Star selection. He's a versatile and young player who could help multiple organizations, and it only makes sense that they consider parting ways with him if they get a fair deal in return.
The Red Sox have looked determined to get back to contention after a disappointing campaign. And with star third baseman Alex Bregman still testing the free-agency waters, landing another Cardinals star would be the best way to appease the fan base.
Donovan hit .287 with 10 home runs and 50 RBI in 118 games in 2025. With the Red Sox struggling to find consistency at second base with Kristian Campbell and David Hamilton, he might be the best bet to get back to contention.
