One perfect free-agent signing for every AL West team

The American League West has been one of the most active divisions this offseason as every team (including the Athletics) has made a big splash through free agency or via trade.

There is, however, more work to be done in a division that will likely be a three-team race for the top spot. With that in mind, here is one realistic free agent who can help each of the five teams get better in 2025.

Athletics: Jakob Junis

The Athletics have already fortified their rotation with the record-setting signing of Luis Severino, so why not make another pitching move to add some more value in the back end of their bullpen?

Junis battled through injuries last season but finished the year strong, posting a 1.82 ERA over his final 24.2 innings while opponents hit just .143 against him. Those kinds of numbers would play well in Sacramento, where the A's will be looking for someone reliable to be the bridge between the rotation and closer Mason Miller.

Houston Astros: Randal Grichuk

The Astros have remade their infield by signing Christian Walker to man first base and acquiring Isaac Paredes for the hot corner from the Chicago Cubs in the Kyle Tucker trade. Now, Houston has to figure out how to build some depth in its outfield.

Grichuk is a veteran bat who can conceivably play all three outfield positions. His slash line of .291/.348/.528 in 279 plate appearances with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season was solid, and he ended the year with a flourish, slashing .404/.451/.957 in 47 September at-bats as the Diamondbacks chased a postseason berth.

Los Angeles Angels: Kirby Yates

The Angels have been one of the most active MLB teams this winter, including a trade with the Atlanta Braves that brought Jorge Soler to Anaheim as well as signing starting pitcher Yusei Kikuchi.

Building up the bullpen is still on the radar for the Angels, and owner Arte Moreno has said that he wants to put people on the roster who want to win and compete. That would include Yates, a two-time All-Star and a veteran reliever who is already very familiar with Angels manager Ron Washington when their paths crossed with the Atlanta Braves.

Yates did very well for the Texas Rangers last season (1.17 ERA in 61.2 innings, plus 33 saves), so keeping him in the division might make sense as well.

Seattle Mariners: Justin Turner

The Mariners need offense, and Turner gave them that last season in his 190 plate appearances, slashing .264/.363/.403 with an OPS+ of 128. At the age of 40, Turner can still provide some offense and would also give the Mariners some flexibility at both corner infield positions.

A one-year deal could give the Mariners a platoon option with question marks about just how much consistent offense Seattle can find in 2025 still frustrating fans in the Pacific Northwest.

Texas Rangers: Jose Leclerc

The Texas bullpen is set to look a lot different in 2025 than it did in 2024 when Yates and Leclerc were some of the key pieces at manager Bruce Bochy's disposal.

While Leclerc did not put up the numbers in 2024 (4.32 ERA in 66.2 innings) versus what he did during the World Series run in 2023 (2.68 ERA in 57.0 frames), his career ERA of 3.27 over 360.1 innings with the Rangers is something that can be seen as a hope for this season and beyond.

Pitching will be key for the Rangers to return to the postseason in 2025, and Leclerc (who holds records already with Texas) could help solidify the back end of the bullpen once again.
