Congrats to Bruce Pearl, who is now one of the winningest head coaches in Auburn basketball history after his No. 2-ranked team beat Missouri this past weekend.
Give him congratulations for his 213th win — which allowed him to tie Joel Eaves for the mark — and he'll soon pass over Eaves to become the sole leader in that category for Auburn.
That's a big deal, as Pearl has been one heck of the coach for the Tigers over his past 11 seasons on The Plains, but he isn't looking to celebrate his accomplishments right now.
Auburn is 13-1 and looking to make a real run at the national championship this season. As such, the only thing Pearl cares about is getting his team ready for its next game, which is against 11-3 Texas on Tuesday.
“But you have to know me, I’m on to Texas and the next one,” Pearl said after the Missouri win, according to On3.
Pearl did say he'll celebrate his accomplishments this offseason, but his response to tying the record at Auburn was very reminiscent of another great coach, albeit in a different sport and league.
The situation was different, too, because Bill Belichick's New England Patriots were coming off an embarrassing 41-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. His 2014 utterance of "We're onto Cincinnati" went down in legend, though, because it pointed to the game-by-game focus and dedication it takes to be a champion.
It's a mindset, and Pearl obviously has that mindset himself. Now let's see if it can pay off in a championship for himself and the Tigers. A college head coach since 2001-02, Pearl has never won it all.
