Lakers head coach JJ Redick revealed Tuesday night that his family was forced to evacuate its home due to the treacherous Southern California wildfires.
Shortly before the Lakers' 118-97 loss to the Mavericks, Redick acknowledged the seriousness of the situation in the Pacific Palisades, where over 30,000 residents were forced to flee their burning homes on Tuesday.
"I just want to acknowledge and send thoughts and prayers to everyone in the Palisades right now," Redick said, via the Associated Press. "That's where I live. Our family, my wife's family, my wife's twin sister, they've evacuated. I know a lot of people are freaking out right now, including my family. From the sound of things, with the winds coming (Tuesday night), I know a lot of people are scared. So I just want to acknowledge that. Thoughts and prayers for sure, and hope everybody stays safe."
The TNT broadcast noted that the Lakers' flight back to Los Angeles from Dallas was delayed due to the wildfires. However, LeBron James and Co. were still scheduled to return to Southern California late Tuesday night despite the potential for smoke-filed skies forcing alternate routes.
Redick wasn't the only NBA head coach whose family was affected by the wildfires. Warriors head coach Steve Kerr noted that his 90-year-old mother, Ann, was also forced to evacuate her home. After the Warriors' 114-98 loss in Miami, Kerr further revealed that Everett Dayton, a member of the team's player development program, lost his family home in the Pacific Palisades region.
"Everything I'm seeing and reading is just terrifying what's happening down there," Kerr said, via the Associated Press. "So, just want to send thoughts to everyone who's going through the devastation of the fire. Obviously the game is secondary to that and to many things in life. Perspective is important."
California governor Gavin Newsom announced Wednesday morning that over 1,400 firefighters had been deployed to quell the wildfires in the state.
