Washington Commanders offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury has received widespread praise for helping quarterback Jayden Daniels become the uncrowned Offensive Rookie of the Year Award winner for the ongoing season.
The New York Jets, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints could all reportedly target Kingsbury regarding their head-coaching openings, but it sounds like he could stay with Washington through at least January 2026.
"According to multiple team sources in Washington," ESPN's John Keim reported on Thursday, "it's not a slam dunk that Kingsbury will leave. With Daniels' emergence in Year 1, it will take more than a big offer to make Kingsbury leave Washington."
Kingsbury served as head coach of the Arizona Cardinals from 2019-22, and he played a role in quarterback Kyler Murray earning Offensive Rookie of the Year Award honors for the 2019 campaign. However, Kingsbury ultimately accumulated an overall record of 28-37-1 with just a single playoff appearance and no postseason wins before he was fired in January 2023. Arizona went 4-13 in Kingsbury's last season.
ESPN's Jeremy Fowler noted on Thursday that the Las Vegas Raiders tried to hire Kingsbury as their offensive coordinator last offseason and could want him as their next head coach this winter considering it appears Las Vegas will fail to land either Bill Belichick or Mike Vrabel. Meanwhile, Kingsbury was a senior offensive analyst at USC in 2023 as current Bears quarterback Caleb Williams finished his college career.
With all of that said, Kingsbury seems more than happy to first concentrate on Washington's postseason journey. The 12-5 Commanders face the 10-7 Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the playoffs this coming Sunday night.
"I didn't get into this to be a head coach again," Kingsbury recently told Keim about joining Washington last February. "It's not about money. It never has been about money. So, that won't move me at all. It's just I want to do the best job we can here for those guys and then kind of go from there."
That's all well and good, but Kingsbury may eventually determine that the money that comes with serving as a head coach for a team that features a promising young quarterback such as Williams or Jacksonville's Trevor Lawrence is too good to pass up.
