Yankees are now reportedly out on signing Alex Bregman

The New York Yankees have had an impressive offseason thus far. Pitcher Max Fried and first baseman Paul Goldschmidt were signed as free agents, solidifying two areas of need. Trades for outfielder Cody Bellinger and closer Devin Williams strengthened the lineup and bullpen respectively.

While the Yankees have made a strong start in revamping the roster, third base is still an area of need. New York had been linked to free agent Alex Bregman since the 2024 trade deadline as the Astros struggled to open the season.

However, the Yankees are reportedly no longer interested in bringing Bregman on board. Jon Heyman of the New York Post said that the Tigers and Red Sox were the most likely landing spots for the free agent third baseman.

Heyman mentioned Bregman's price tag as the reason, as he feels that the Yankees will not spend that type of money after their acquisitions so far in the offseason.

The Yankees' reluctance to pay for Bregman explains a report earlier in the month. Joel Sherman of the New York Post had reported that the Yanks were going to give DJ LeMahieu another chance at third base. LeMahieu had struggled through an injury-plagued 2024, posting his worst season since becoming a major league regular.

While Heyman feels that the Yankees do not need Bregman, New York does need another potentially dangerous bat in the lineup. Bregman has also been one of the best defensive third basemen in the game, winning the 2024 Gold Glove while saving an American League leading 12 runs. He would be a perfect fit in the lineup and infield.

Success in New York is measured by championships. The Yankees have not won the World Series since 2009, the second-longest stretch in franchise history since winning their first championship in 1921. Adding Bregman could make an impact on ending that streak. It is just a matter of opening the checkbook again, something the Yankees are reportedly reluctant to do.
