Reporter expands on Deion Sanders-Cowboys buzz

Rumors are linking Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders to the Dallas Cowboys, but he remains noncommittal about his future.

After the Cowboys and head coach Mike McCarthy parted ways Monday, Dallas owner Jerry Jones contacted Sanders, via Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz.

During a Tuesday interview with "Unsportsmanlike," ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said he asked Sanders what's next in his conversations with the Cowboys, and the coach said, "I don't know."

"To hear from Jerry Jones is truly delightful, and it's intriguing," Sanders said Monday night, per Schefter. "I love Jerry and believe in Jerry. After you hang up, and process it, and think about it, it's intriguing. But I love Boulder and everything there is about our team, the coaches, our student body and the community."

Sanders has a five-year, $29.5M deal with Colorado. Perhaps he's talking to NFL teams to convince the school to give him a massive extension.

He may also be unsure whether the Cowboys will draft his sons, Colorado quarterback Shedeur and safety Shilo. In a recent interview with ABC's "Good Morning America," Deion Sanders said he would consider coaching in the NFL if a team drafted his sons.

Don't expect the Cowboys to ditch starting quarterback Dak Prescott for Shedeur Sanders. Before the start of the season, Prescott signed a four-year, $240M deal, which includes a no-trade clause.

If the Cowboys released Prescott with a post-June 1 designation, they would incur $89.89M in dead cap, per Over the Cap.

While the Cowboys hiring Deion Sanders seems unlikely, Jones may continue targeting candidates he knows well. Of course, the Pro Football Hall of Fame defensive back starred for Dallas from 1995-99, winning a Super Bowl.

In a piece published Tuesday, ESPN's Dan Graziano predicted Dallas would hire Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Moore was the Cowboys OC from 2019-22.

Still, don't be stunned if the Cowboys continue pursuing Deion Sanders. The club may want to make a splash after it went 7-10 and missed the playoffs.
