If the New York Mets don't sign free agent Pete Alonso, a four-time All-Star, they must seek alternatives at first base. Could they strike a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., another four-time All-Star, to replace him?
Per SNY's Andy Martino, league sources say the Mets have spoken with the Blue Jays about Guerrero. "Checking in," the sources called those discussions.
Guerrero, 25, is under contract for this season. However, the Blue Jays haven't decided if they want to offer him a contract extension.
Per USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Toronto and Guerrero are far apart on a deal, with Guerrero seeking at least $450 million.
The right-handed slugger recently stated that he will cut off extension talks during the first full day of spring training.
Blue Jays' first full squad workout is Feb. 18 per MLB release. That's also the deadline for extension talks with Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

If Guerrero doesn't sign an extension, it would not be shocking for speculation to linger about a trade of the Blue Jay to the Mets.
In 2024, Guerrero hit .323 with 30 home runs, 103 RBI and a .940 OPS.
Guerrero would give the Mets the protection they need in their lineup, nicely complementing prized free-agent addition Juan Soto, but a deal is far from likely at the moment.
The Mets remain focused on Alonso, but the addition of Guerrero would be a solid backup plan.
