Another day, another teenager ousting a top-10 player at the 2025 Australian Open. That has been the theme of the year's first major, with Brazilian Joao Fonseca defeating No. 9 Andrey Rublev, Czech teenager Jakub Mensik ousting No. 6 Casper Ruud, and now, American teenager Learner Tien taking down No. 5 Daniil Medvedev.
Of the three upsets, Tien's win over Medvedev was the biggest given the latter's accomplishments — a three-time Australian Open finalist, former World No. 1 and 2021 U.S. Open winner.
Tien, 19, is the youngest American to beat a top-5 player at a grand slam since Pete Sampras in 1990. Sampras was also the last American teenager to reach the third round at the Australian Open 35 years ago.

The five-set marathon, which lasted four hours and 49 minutes, was ultimately decided in a fifth-set tiebreaker that Tien clinched 10-7. The American showed incredible resiliency, winning two break points to draw level. At that point, an irate Medvedev became demonstrative and ultimately committed two unforced errors to lose the match. In many ways, the Russian was forced into submission.
After the biggest win of his career, Tien thanked the late-night crowd that stuck around until the wee hours of the morning.

Tien walked into the Melbourne major with confidence after breezing through the qualifiers and reaching the finals at December's Net Gen ATP Finals. He will next face unseeded Frenchman Corentin Moutet in the third round, with a realistic chance of going deeper in the draw.
Tien's win on Thursday meant that the 2025 Australian Open has replicated a feat not seen at a major since the 2006 French Open.
3 - Since 1973, this year's AO is only the third GS event where three teenagers (Joao Fonseca, Jakub Mensik and now Learner Tien) have claimed ATP top 10 wins after Roland Garros in 1990 and 2006. Future. #AO2025 | @AustralianOpen @atptour @ATPMediaInfo
