Carlos Alcaraz said he plans to get a kangaroo tattoo if he wins the Australian Open for the first time, as he powered into the last 16 in Melbourne on Friday.
The 21-year-old third seed dropped one set but showcased his array of skills against Portugal’s Nuno Borges on Rod Laver Arena, defeating him 6-2 6-4 6-7(3) 6-2 on his first appearance on the main court this year after playing his first two matches on the adjacent Margaret Court Arena.
He hit 54 winners and nine aces in a masterclass on baseline play, and he will play either Britain’s Jack Draper or Australia’s Aleksandar Vukic.
The Spaniard aims to become the youngest male player to achieve a career Grand Slam—winning all four major tournaments—in the Open Era. His compatriot Rafael Nadal accomplished the feat in 2010 at 24.
If he succeeds, he will also make history as the youngest champion at Melbourne Park since Novak Djokovic’s victory in 2008 and who he will likely need to defeat in the quarterfinal if they both win their upcoming matches.
Alcaraz is already focused on claiming the trophy and has pledged to get a kangaroo tattoo if he wins the title.
“It’s a kangaroo, that’s for sure. That’s my idea,” he said.
“The only thing I miss is to lift the trophy here, but the plan is already taken.”
When he captured the US Open, Alcaraz commemorated his victory with a tattoo of the date and followed that with tattoos of the Eiffel Tower and a strawberry after winning the French Open and Wimbledon.
