One of the biggest names in MLB free agency has officially chosen his new team.
That would be 23-year-old Japanese starting pitcher Roki Sasaki, who opted to forgo a more lucrative payday to pursue his MLB ambitions earlier. According to an announcement on his Instagram page, Sasaki is joining the Los Angeles Dodgers.
But who is Sasaki and what should baseball fans expect from him? Here are 10 things to know about the dynamic right-hander:
1. Roki Sasaki may be the most hyped Japanese prospect to come stateside in years.
This isn't an exaggeration. Sasaki is perhaps the most coveted prospect to arrive from Japan since at least Yu Darvish. And that includes the highly touted arrivals of Dodgers starting pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto and designated hitter Shohei Ohtani.
"He’s as good as advertised ... He has an ideal projectable, lean and athletic frame," one international scout said about Sasaki. "He has excellent arm action and delivery, with three plus power pitches with control over command. He has No. 1 [starter] upside.”
2. He drew MLB interest in 2019 but decided to join Nippon Professional Baseball.
Most Japanese players who aspire to pursue baseball professionally typically begin their careers in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB). Sasaki didn't wind up becoming an exception, spending his first four professional seasons with NPB's Chiba Lotte Marines.
However, he attracted interest from MLB teams as an amateur in 2019.
3. Sasaki has a close relationship with San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish.
One of the reasons the Padres were rumored to be finalists for Sasaki is because his mentor and fellow countryman, Yu Darvish, plays in San Diego.
In fact, Sasaki even learned his signature wipeout slider from Darvish.

4. Sasaki helped pitch Team Japan to a championship in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
Sasaki was a major catalyst behind Samurai Japan's run to a WBC title in 2023 over Team USA. Overshadowed by the likes of more familiar such as Ohtani and Darvish, Sasaki announced himself to an international audience during the WBC.
5. He pitched one of the most dominant perfect games ever.
In 2022, Sasaki punched out 19 NPB hitters en route to a perfect game, including a record 13 consecutive strikeouts.
6. Sasaki doesn't love the spotlight.
His agent, Joel Wolfe, has made it clear during his free-agency process that Sasaki prefers a small- or mid-market MLB team, but he ended up with the big-market Los Angeles Dodgers because winning matters most.
7. Sasaki's career stats in NPB are something to behold.
Sasaki's career ERA in Japan was 2.02 in 69 games played. But his 11.4 strikeouts-per-nine innings rate is even more impressive, as is his microscopic 0.3 home runs allowed per nine innings. In other words, he limits home runs and strikes batters out.
8. His nickname is "The Monster of the Reiwa Era."
Sasaki's nickname is a tribute to legendary Japanese starting pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka, who was known as the "Monster of the Heisei," referring to different eras of the Japanese calendar.
9. Sasaki's life has been marred by personal tragedy.
The 23-year-old lost both his father and grandfather during the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami.
10. Money doesn't mean everything to Sasaki.
If it did, he would've waited two more years to be posted by his NPB club, in accordance with international free-agency rules that stipulate a player under 25 with six or less years of professional experience must be designated as an "amateur" on the market.
