No. 1 Auburn escapes No. 23 Georgia, stays undefeated in conference play

A surge in the last seven minutes of game time helped No. 23 Georgia nearly knock off No. 1 Auburn on Saturday. Ultimately, a missed tip shot at the buzzer saw the Tigers hang on for a 70-68 win and remain undefeated in SEC play.

As a team, Auburn was better from three-point range (43.5%) than it was from the rest of the field (39.3%). The Tigers shoot 37.9% from three on the season, and the increase in production Saturday was certainly impactful.

Once again for Auburn, the impact of freshman guard Tahaad Pettiford off the bench cannot be overstated. Pettiford has scored 12-plus points in each of his last three games and 10-plus in each of his last five.

On Saturday, he led all scorers with 24 points, shooting 5-for-7 from three-point range. The five triples tied his season high from the beginning of November.

While he didn't score much, senior center Dylan Cardwell filled up the stat sheet for Auburn, finishing with two points, seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and four blocks. Cardwell's presence on the offensive boards helped Auburn collect second-chance points.

Georgia nearly pulled off what would've been one of the top comebacks of the season. The Bulldogs trailed by seven with 40 seconds remaining and had an opportunity to tie the game at the buzzer.

Freshman forward Asa Newell had the chance to send the game to overtime and came up just short on a tip shot. He was the best player on the floor for Georgia, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds. It was the fourth double-double of the season for Newell.

Sophomore guard Blue Cain and senior guard Tyrin Lawrence each finished with 12 points and were the two other Bulldogs in double figures.

Despite injuries and late-game scares, Auburn continues to find a way to win and until they are knocked off, they will continue to be ranked No. 1 and considered the best teams in college basketball.
