Madison Keys felt her career was all but over when she lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the semifinals of the 2023 U.S. Open.
The veteran American was selective about the events she played in 2024, achieving little success in the tournaments she entered. Many felt the writing was on the wall when she suffered a third-round exit at the U.S. Open, her home major where she has historically been excellent.
That's why Keys, 29, has surprised herself with her improbable run in the ongoing Australian Open. After defeating Elina Svitolina 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to clinch a semifinal berth on Wednesday, Keys burst into tears while putting her career in perspective.

Wednesay's win was a testament to Keys' longevity on the Tour, considering she reached her first Australian Open semifinal in 2015. In the following years, she made several deep runs at major events, including an appearance at the 2017 U.S. Open final.
The ultimate journeywoman, Keys is now just a win away from her second career major final. Standing in her way is World No. 2 Iga Swiatek, who didn't drop a solitary set en route to the final four. Keys plans to walk away with her "head held high" despite the result.
"This is really what they call the business end of the tournament," Keys said, via WTA Tour. "So as much as you have experience in all of that, at the end of the day it's also you just have to go out and do your best and leave it all out there. I think as long as I can do that, no matter what happens, then I can walk away with my head held high."
Keys has now won 10 straight matches as part of a 12-1 run in 2025 including a WTA 500 title in Adelaide. The in-form Keys joins Ben Shelton among the only Americans still alive in the first major of the year. They are the first Americans to reach the semifinals of the same Australian Open since Andy Roddick and Serena Williams in 2009.
