No. 5 Florida survives upset scare vs. South Carolina

The No. 5 Florida Gators trailed for 39 minutes and 55 seconds Wednesday night and somehow prevailed with a 70-69 win over South Carolina. The Gators took their first lead with 4.8 seconds remaining after a go-ahead layup from Will Richard.

Unforced errors and live ball turnovers were killer for South Carolina down the stretch. Florida collected 13 steals as a team, including having three players with at least three steals.

The Gamecocks had a lead of 13 with 8:49 remaining in the game and had all the momentum after a monster dunk by Zachary Davis. Davis led South Carolina in scoring with 22 points.

Florida then went on a 6-0 run in 26 seconds to cut the lead to seven points.

Florida would continue to scratch and claw its way back into the game, eventually tying it at 68 with 52 seconds remaining and ultimately winning the game on Richard's layup.

Richard was one of three Gators in double figures. Walter Clayton Jr. (16 points) and Alijah Martin (14 points) were the other two. The three combined for 52 of Florida's 70 points, a huge recipe for success and advantage to have three players be able to carry you to a victory.

South Carolina fell to 0-6 in SEC play with the loss and will have some serious soul-searching to do before welcoming in No. 14 Mississippi State on Saturday.

The Gamecocks have now lost three games in SEC play by 3 points or less, two of those being against Top 5 teams. They do not have a true closer and someone who can step up and put games away.

Collin Murray-Boyles had 11 points in the first half but finished with just 13. South Carolina's inability to get him the ball late in games proved costly yet again.

For Florida, finding a way to win a conference road game is always a big deal and should never be taken lightly.

For South Carolina, a chance at back-to-back NCAA tournaments is fading away at a rapid pace.
