Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford has two years left on a contract that, per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, includes a $4M fully guaranteed roster bonus due this March and a non-guaranteed $23M salary for 2025. Thus, Stafford theoretically should be on track to serve as the Rams' Week 1 starter this coming September unless he decides to retire.
Rams head coach Sean McVay was asked at his end-of-season news conference about Stafford's status with the club assuming the veteran, who turns 37 years old in February, elects to continue playing.
"We'll talk about all those things at the appropriate time," McVay curiously answered.
Shortly after the Rams suffered a 28-22 divisional-round playoff loss at the Philadelphia Eagles this past Sunday, Stafford revealed that he would "take some time to think about" his future. However, the fact he also said that "it sure feels like" he has good football left in him caused members of the football community to believe he wasn't ready to call time on his career.
"I know he's playing really good football," McVay said about Stafford on Thursday. "Obviously, I love him, love working with him. What he's meant to our football team has been immeasurable in a positive way."
According to Pro Football Reference, Stafford ended the season ranked 12th in the NFL with a 64.7 adjusted QBR, 12th with an average of 235.1 passing yards per game and eighth with a 50.1 percent passing success rate. Across 16 starts, he tallied 20 touchdown passes and eight interceptions.
The Rams hold overall pick No. 26 in the 2025 NFL Draft that, in the eyes of most analysts, includes a weak quarterback class. Meanwhile, the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Giants and New Orleans Saints could be mentioned among potential landing spots for Stafford if he becomes available during the new league year that opens in March.
McVay added during his comments that he would like a resolution regarding the Stafford situation "sooner than later." It certainly sounds like the one-time Super Bowl champion could take snaps for a team other than the Rams later this year if he determines that he still enjoys "playing too much to hang it up."
