No. 11 Kentucky women have brutal night from deep in loss to Texas A&M

The 11th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats suffered their first setback in conference play with a 61-55 loss to Texas A&M on Thursday night.

The loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for Kentucky. Although the Wildcats held a 30-25 halftime lead, shots were hard to come by, especially from long range. Kentucky shot a horrendous 1-of-18 (5.6%) from deep in the loss.

The team's leading scorer this season, senior guard Georgia Amoore, had 15 points on 5-of-18 shooting and 0-of-8 from long range. Even though she could not get the shots to fall from deep, Amoore showed off her moves with this layup to give Kentucky a 42-35 lead with 2:52 left in the third quarter.

Other than junior forward Teonni Key, who had 20 points (8-of-16 FG), no one on the team shot 50% or better. While Kentucky is only shooting 33.1% this season from behind the arc, it still made seven threes in its only other loss to then-No. 16 North Carolina on Dec. 5, so the lack of production from behind the arc on Thursday was surprising.

Senior guard Aicha Coulibaly had a team-high 21 points for the Aggies. Senior forward Lauren Ware had 10 points (5-of-8 FG), including this bucket to give Texas A&M a 50-49 lead with 5:50 remaining.

This was only the second win over a ranked opponent in seven attempts this season for Texas A&M (10-8, 3-3 SEC). It will be difficult for the Aggies to keep the momentum rolling with a road trip to No. 5 LSU on Sunday.

With Kentucky relying so much on its starters, its success hinges on them staying out of foul trouble and consistently knocking down their shots. Only seven Wildcats played on Thursday night and three of them had four fouls. As Kentucky (16-2, 5-1 SEC) returns home to face Arkansas on Sunday, getting more long-range shots to fall and staying out of foul trouble is going to be crucial to getting back in the win column.

The schedule is daunting with six ranked opponents the rest of the way. However, Kentucky has the size and shot-making ability to contend in those games. It just does not need a repeat of its performance from Thursday night.
