Long before Aaron Glenn became the latest head coach of the New York Jets, he and retired wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson were teammates with the organization in the 1990s.
During a Thursday appearance on FS1's "Speak" program, Johnson boldly predicted whether Glenn will welcome quarterback Aaron Rodgers back to the Jets for at least one more season.
"He will not start off his career with Aaron Rodgers as his quarterback in September," Johnson said about Glenn, Manny Gomez of NJ Advance Media for NJ.com shared. "And if he does, then I’m walking from Calabasas at 4 a.m. in the morning to the studio with nothing on but boxers. I’m saying this with a lot of confidence. ...I’m just telling you. I’m just letting you know he ain’t gonna start his career with that mess. It’s not gonna happen."
For those wondering, Arthur Weinstein of Awful Announcing noted that Johnson would take roughly a 28-mile walk if he is wrong and stays true to his word.
It's unknown if Rodgers, 41, wants to continue playing in the short term. The former Hall of Famer has dealt with numerous significant physical setbacks over the past two seasons. Multiple stories have claimed that before the Jets hired Glenn, they were prepared to move on from the future Hall of Famer. Still, it's believed Glenn and a to-be-chosen general manager will have the final say on any Rodgers-related decision.
Rodgers allegedly held quite a bit of power with the Jets under their previous regime, so he was allowed to skip the club's two-day mandatory minicamp this past offseason to enjoy a pre-planned vacation. Johnson doesn't envision Glenn tolerating Rodgers' actions and personality.
"He’s not gonna allow somebody to tell him what he’s doing," Johnson said about Glenn. "...I don’t know who they’re going into the season with, but they ain’t going into the season with No. 8."
ESPN's Rich Cimini reported earlier this week that "Glenn still considered Rodgers an 'elite' quarterback at the time of his trade to the Jets" in 2023. Cimini added that it's "unclear" what Glenn thinks about Rodgers' abilities.
"This is a tough decision for Glenn and his new GM," Cimini continued. "They will be hard-pressed to find a better quarterback in the offseason market. On the flip side, it might be tricky to create a team-first culture with Rodgers (and everything that comes with him) in the building."
Matthew Stafford of the Los Angeles Rams, Russell Wilson of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Kirk Cousins of the Atlanta Falcons could be veteran options for the Jets if they part ways with Rodgers or if he retires.
Hall of Fame coach Bill Parcells and New Orleans Saints legend Drew Brees mentioned this week that Glenn "doesn’t [mess] around" and will be "a leader of men." Johnson expanded on such takes during Thursday's program.
"He’s not the typical, quiet, not going to say anything. No, he's going to challenge his players just like he did as a defender," Johnson said about Glenn.
